The friendly confines of the New Zealand track always makes for fast, close and exciting racing. Last year?s event attracted 86,702 fans, making it one of New Zealand?s most popular sporting events.
00 Motorsport?s Craig Lowndes heads to New Zealand on a high after scoring outright second at the recent Gillette Challenge on the streets of Surfers Paradise.
Lowndes finished on the same points as winner Jason Bargwanna, but was officially classified second as Bargwanna had finished in front of Lowndes in the weekend?s final race.
?The result at Surfers Paradise has the team on a real high and we?re confident of continuing that form in New Zealand,? said Lowndes.
?This is our second official championship visit to Pukekohe and we have everything in place to go for victory.
?The New Zealand fans are very supportive and it would be great to give Ford its first V8 Supercar Championship win across the ditch.?
A number of teams feature New Zealanders, including owners of Stone Brothers Racing, Ross and Jimmy.
However, most New Zealand focus will be on two-time World Touring Car Cup Champion Paul Radisich (Shell Helix Racing), who recently won the Yellow Pages 500 New Zealand Touring car event at Ruapuna outside Christchurch.
?My form in New Zealand is 100% right now and I?d like to keep it that way when I race at Pukekohe,? said Radisich.
?This year has been pretty tough in the V8 Supercars, but I drove from last to 10th at Surfers Paradise and if not for engine problems during qualifying I?m sure we could have challenged.
?I?m determined to be part of the challenge at Pukekohe and make sure the home fans can cheer for a local Ford driver.
There?s been plenty of work to get the Ford Racing Australia crews to New Zealand. Teams had just three days before their racecars and transporters were loaded onto a cargo ship to cross the Tasman on Wednesday 30 October.
Teams will unload all their equipment in time for practice and qualifying on the Friday, with a top-10 Shootout in the morning and the opening 36-lap race on Saturday afternoon. Sunday rounds-out the program with two 54-lap races. All races include a compulsory tyre pit stop.
