Ford Takes Dramatic QLD 500

Shell Helix Racing duo Steve Johnson and Paul Radisich have won the VIP Pet Foods Queensland 500 after a massive downpour forced organisers to end the race at 156 of the scheduled 161 laps.

In an incredible sequence of events, Radisich spun off the track on lap 157 when officials decided to end the race; the same lap Russell Ingall had taken the lead. Even though lap 157 had started – the results were based on the previous completed lap before the red flag. Radisich learnt of the win while sitting off the track bogged in a sand trap. The 500km race had many incidents, but it was the final 30-laps where it all unfolded. Ingall took the lead after a quick pit stop on lap 120, but when the rain came it was Radisich who quickly closed-in and took the lead. “There was no way I could catch Russell in the dry – but when the rain came I made my move,” said Radisich. “Two laps prior to the red flag, we both changed to wet tyres. However, the final heavy shower virtually flooded the track and forced officials to call the race early. “You could not see the end of the bonnet, so to end the race early was the right decision in terms of safety and obviously it worked to our advantage. “This is a great boost for the upcoming Bathurst 1000km event in October where Steve and I once again combine,” Radisich said. The result has provided a great boost to Steve Johnson’s championship hopes. He now lies 208 points behind Mark Skaife, with Jason Bright just 104 away in second place. Skaife and Bright finished fourth in today’s race. “My championship challenge is now very much alive,” said Johnson. “The team did an awesome job in the pits and Paul was outstanding over those closing laps. “This is a career highlight – I’m sure the next win won’t be in such dramatic circumstances. Of the other Ford teams to shine were Steve Ellery and Geoff Brabham in the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon AUXR8 who took sixth place, with Paul Weel and Tim Leahey one place further back, closely followed by Jim Richards and Dean Canto. Ellery ended-up off the track next Radisich and was first to congratulate his fellow Ford driver. Ford next goes racing at Winton (Victoria) on September 8 – 9, with Bathurst to follow on October 4 – 7.
