Ford Australia has announced a major sponsorship of the Globe World Cup Skateboarding Championships to be held at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on February 16 and 17, 2002.

Ford is working in partnership with Globe International to present the exciting event in Australia. Globe International is a skate, surf and urban clothing and footwear company.

"Ford is thrilled to be part of the first Australian series of Globe International World Cup Skateboarding, as it allows us to tap into a young and fresh market," says Ford Australia General Manager of Marketing, Susie Meagher.

"These are the people who will be driving our cars in the future," she says "It's important for us to recognize what is driving them now."

As part of the sponsorship, Ford has provided three prize vehicles, including an Independent XR8 Ute, a Ka and an F-250 truck. The vehicles will be offered as prizes to the winners of Globe World Cup Skateboarding and associated competitions.

The winner of the National Qualifying Series will take home the Independent XR8 Ute, while the Gallaz Girlz Street Jam winner will receive the Ka. The overall winner of 2002 Globe World Cup Skateboarding will skate away with the F-250 truck.

The sponsorship is part of Ford's ongoing relationship with Globe International. Ford and Globe previously joined forces to create the M-ONE-11 Escape concept car, which was unveiled at the Sydney International Motor Show.

This sponsorship is one of many initiatives Ford is pursuing to communicate with the youth market, including the Ford Alive program and an increased involvement in motorsport.

World Cup Skateboarding holds events throughout the year in the USA, South America and Europe. Series winners compete in the championships for the World Cup. The Australian Series will be held on Saturday the 16th of February, followed with the World Cup Skateboarding Championships on the 17th at Rod Laver Arena.
