Ford Racing’s engineers were given carté blanche to revamp a 1.8 litre Laser GLXi and the result is the Laser Panther.

Developments to the engine, 5-speed manual transmission, suspension, and brake systems are combined with a sportier interior and exterior to show the potential for the Ford Laser to be enhanced for even greater driving enjoyment.

“This was a great project to work on,” says Ford Racing Product Development Engineer, Matthew Lyall. “Laser is a fantastic product and it was fun to be able to take a standard vehicle and add some really great features to make it exciting and individual. The really great thing is that everything we’ve done with this car can be done by an ordinary Laser owner.”

Enhancements to the engine include the addition of an equal length extractor exhaust manifold by USA exhausts, a Jenroy stainless steel 2” sports exhaust pipe and muffler system, Ford Racing reground camshafts, and a Unichip engine control unit.

17” Momo wheels set off the new suspension system that includes Eibach springs with a revised rate and height, Koni shock absorbers, and uprated front and rear stabiliser bars.

A short throw gearshift linkage and limited slip differential have been added to the 5-speed manual transmission, while larger diameter front brake rotors and nickel plated twin piston front calipers and a revised master cylinder and proportioning valve have improved the brake system.

In addition to the 17” wheels, the sportier exterior package includes a special metallic black panther paint with green pearl highlights, front and rear perforated aluminum grilles and tinted windows and lamps.

On the interior, enhancements include reshaped sport style front and rear seats, retrimmed door panels, a Momo Millennium steering wheel, a Momo Aluminum sport gear knob, Momo Corse pedal covers, nickel plated door handles, steering wheel accents, a premium soundproof package, a carpeted rear hatch area, and a Ford premium sound system with CD stacker, DSP, separate power amplifier and subwoofer.

“It’s fantastic to see what the Ford Racing team have done in conjunction with some of our suppliers,” said Passenger Car Marketing Manager, Stephen Kruk. “It highlights the enormous potential for Laser which will be enhanced even further when the 2.0 litre arrives in April.”
