Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes were top of the Ford V8 Supercar tree at Queensland Raceway this weekend, between them claiming pole and dominating the podium.

Jamie and Craig celebrate with the pit crew.

Whincup celebrated his 50th V8 Supercar start in style, putting his #88 Falcon on pole at Team Vodafone’s home track in his Falcon during Saturday’s qualifying.

Success continued for the Blue Oval star, crossing the line fourth, second and second respectively throughout round seven’s three 38 lap races, the combined result putting him second for the weekend.

“To go away with pole plus second and third on the podium. well Team Vodafone leaves Queensland Raceway quite proud,” said Jamie Whincup.

“We still need to do a little more to catch (round winner and championship leader) Garth Tander, and that’s what we’re aiming to achieve.”

“This is our home track, we know the circuit well – although it’s not necessarily a huge advantage racing here, the track changes so much.”

“It’s also easy to get caught in your comfort zone especially with car set-up. We’ve managed to avoid that this weekend and come away with an admirable result.”

“I’m looking forward to Oran Park, we were quick there last year, our cars are a little different now but we’re looking to hold the battle between us and the Holdens.”

Lowndes was just a notch behind his team-mate all weekend and graced the third step of the podium. Qualifying his #888 Falcon sixth, the Kid inched forward and remained consistent across the sprint races, placing fifth, third and third.

“We were hoping to be at the front this weekend and we fought till the end to get there,” said Craig Lowndes.

“We test here but the track changes a lot in different temperatures, so you just have to go with it.”

“We kept our best tyres till the end and there were a number of safety cars which made our job easier.”

“The team have done a fantastic job, to have both Jamie and myself on the podium really is a credit to their efforts.”

Outstanding performances were also seen by Will Davison who finished fourth overall. James Courtney stood to take the position but was bumped back to sixth thanks to a 27 penalty for contact with Mark Skaife in the final lap of race three.

Ford Performance Racing (FPR) driver Mark Winterbottom finished between them in fifth. Despite being the fastest V8 in the field in practice various incidents saw him drop down the order.

Trouble struck the likes of FPR’s Steven Richards, Britek’s Jason Bright and Jim Beam Racing’s Steven Johnson who all faced DNF results in a least one race.

“Ford remains dominant in quantity, with six in the top ten at both Queensland Raceway and in the Championship standings. ”

Ford’s talented line up of V8 Supercar drivers will hit the track again at Oran Park in Sydney from 17 – 19 August for round eight of the 2007 Championship series.
