Be it bold or subtle, yellow leads Ford Motor Company's car colour palette for 2002.
"In the past, it was rare to see yellow on anything but sports and performance cars such as a Mustang or Ferrari," says Ford Senior Colour and Trim Designer Alan Eggly.
However, now yellow is popular on sports utility vehicles, trucks and other youth-oriented cars, with the latest convert being the funky, new-edge designed Ford Ka.
Ford's popular small car with the style-conscious is now available in Australia in a vivid canary-yellow exterior colour. The outside is complemented with a bright yellow and black trimmed suede interior with yellow inserts on the gear knob, clock surround and carpet mats.
Known as the Kanary Yellow Ka2, the model is fun and bright and sure to capture the attention of a customer set that is extremely fashion conscious given the predictions of yellow hitting the catwalks in a big way in 2002.
In addition, Ford's compact 4WD Escape continues the vibrant yellow theme, introducing "Sunshine Yellow" to the range.
And for the not-so-bold? Blue is back. A wide spectrum of blues will replace the recently popular green as favourite, according to Ford's colour and trim forecasters.
Colour and trim designers spend 11 to 18 months researching colour trends in fashion, furniture and other industries and translating those trends into the hot new vehicle colours.
Ford designers don't make these trend predictions alone. Paint suppliers are a great source of knowledge because they not only know the popular trends, but they supply paint to multiple auto manufacturers and are able to keep tabs on which direction everyone is heading.
Fashion trends are the important predictor. Runaways not only foretell the latest colours and fabrics that you wear, they also determine what colour will look hot on your vehicle and what texture fabric will feel great inside your new car or truck.
"Fashion is an important industry to watch because it acts as a catalyst for other industries," according to Eggly. "Once a trend has been established in fashion, if it is successful for a period of time, it is expanded to durable, longer-lasting items.
"So, for instance, we're seeing the bold popular colours for clothing in recent years translate to cars and trucks."
So what's the popular vehicle colour trend of the future?
"Think 'Orange Crush' can," says Eggly.
