Is it possible to drive a full lap of mainland Australia in comfort, filling up solely on LPG and for around $1000 in fuel costs?
As petrol prices rise and more attention is given to alternative fuels and different forms of transport, Ford Australia will partner with LPG Australia and attempt to drive around the country in a large family sedan – for the price of the same trip in a much smaller car.
A variety of Ford V8 Supercar drivers will take part in different legs of the ‘LPG Challenge – Around Australia for around $1000’, beginning at Ford’s head office in Campbellfield on Thursday, August 3.
Due to take 23 days, the trip will follow a route through Geelong, across to Adelaide, over the Nullarbor, up to Broome, across to Kununurra and Darwin, down to Tennant Creek, over to Townsville, down to Brisbane, across to Tamworth and into Sydney, then through Canberra and back to Melbourne.
Daily updates on the trip (including photography) will be loaded to the Ford Australia website at www.ford.com.au/landing/lpgchallenge throughout the trip.
Leading the Ford charge to succeed in the Ford LPG Challenge will be reining V8 Supercar Champion, Russell Ingall. Russell will depart in the dedicated LPG Fairmont at 2pm on Thursday August 3. He will be waved off by Ford employees as he starts what is believed to be the first official trip of its kind in an LPG vehicle.
