Ford Heritage Journey Approaches Final Stretch

Exactly 75 years after his uncle drove around Australia in a Ford Model A, modern-day adventurer Les Hewitt and his wife Lynette have now covered more than 18,000km in their quest to replicate the historical circumnavigation.

Following more than two months on the road, the Ford Heritage Journey participants have arrived in Sydney and the start of the final stretch of their journey.

"We have enjoyed an amazing response over the past 10 weeks. People often see the Ford Territory and the Heritage Journey logo and talk with us about the trip and view the prints of the glass lantern slides," said Mr Les Hewitt.

"Some of my uncle’s slides include the Ford Model A so we’ve incorporated the Territory as a motoring reference in our photos.  However, my uncle took 179 slides and I’ve already photographed more than 8000 digital images, so it’s going to take me a little longer to catalogue all of the shots when I return home!"

"We’ve met some characters along the way, seen some incredible sights and have plenty of tales to tell our grandchildren," said Mr Hewitt.

The Hewitts aim to complete the entire journey in the next few days and will have done so in far fewer days of travelling than the 1932 adventurers.

"We’ve driven 45 days in total and although we’ve travelled a huge distance it’s been very enjoyable and relaxed motoring.  This is in stark contrast to what was experienced 75 years ago when the expedition was on the go six days a week, often traversing poorly formed tracks and covering unmapped territory," said Mr Hewitt.

The Ford Heritage Journey is expected to finish at Ford Australia Head Office on October 10.

"Part of me is looking forward to getting home again after what will be three months on the road and almost 20,000km, but that’s not to say I’m already thinking about our next adventure."<
