Ford Fill the First Two Rows at the Creek

Ford V8 Supercar debutant Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) has taken his first Shell Championship Pole Position at the third of the 2001 Shell Championship Series at Sydney’s Eastern Creek.

The Tasmanian set a time of 1:30.89955 and will be alongside Gibson Motorsport’s Craig Lowndes with Ford Tickford Racing duo Steven Richards and Glenn Seton to start side-by-side on the second row.

John Bowe will start his brand-new CAT Falcon at position sixth.

Despite being his first time in a V8 at Eastern Creek, Ambrose was confident of a good lap in the top-10 shootout after a strong performance in qualifying.

“Our car has been great this weekend and to put it on pole is a great achievement not only for me, but the team as a whole,” said Ambrose.

“We refined the car throughout practice and qualifying, and I was confident of doing a very quick time.

“The lap was absolutely on the edge, I got pole but I could have very easily been off the road on a number of occasions.

Craig Lowndes was happy with second place, but believed pole was achievable.

“Marcos got it right, where I made a couple of small errors, but the front row is the best place to be,” said Lowndes.

“There is talk of rain tomorrow, so for the guys back a few rows it will be very hard, so I’m hopeful of having the clear road in front me.

Ford Tickford Racing’s Steven Richards was delighted with his run, and that of teammate Glenn Seton in the top-10 shootout.

“To have two cars on the second row is great achievement for our crew,” said Richards.

“The guys have worked non-stop since Adelaide at the start of April, and now we are ready to go ahead again this weekend.

Championship leaders Jason Bright and Mark Skaife will start from positions eight and 10 respectively. Defending champion Skaife spinning off the circuit during his hot lap.
