Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo Charges into Top 10 in Targa Tasmania

Despite heavy rain and treacherous conditions, the Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo entry of Steve Hoinville and Ruth Williams and now entrenched in the top 10 at the Targa Tasmania production car road rally.

Placed ninth outright, midway through the third of five legs, Hoinville and Williams have enjoyed a trouble free run to be the leading Australian built car, with only the more heavily modified exotic German and Japanese entries ahead.

Competing in the Modified Specification (MS) class in a Ford Racing prepared Falcon XR6 Turbo, Hoinville and Williams remain confident of moving even further up the order.

?After really slippery conditions yesterday, today?s stages have been dry and clean, and we?ve been able to exploit the Falcon XR6 Turbo to its full capabilities,? said Hoinville.

?This is the car?s first competitive outing and it?s been a very strong package in all the conditions we?ve faced.

?We?re very much sticking to a plan in terms of pace and we?ve been able to pick off some of the more fancied entries along the way.

?We?ve gone from 16th to ninth in just one leg, but we?re now in the middle of the leading crews. We remain confident that the Falcon XR6 Turbo is a good package over the longer stages this coming weekend, so moving up the order is a strong possibility.?

As part of the Ford Racing crew?s detailed service strategy, the standard gearbox in the Hoinville/Williams car will be changed tonight. This gearbox change is part of the ongoing evaluation of the Falcon XR6 Turbo and all its components in a competitive environment.

MOTOR editor Michael Taylor and Bronwyn Humphrey in the showroom standard Falcon XR6 Turbo continue to run strongly in the top 20.

?We?re having a really good run to be 16th,? said Taylor.

?Driving in the slippery conditions over the Sideling yesterday was probably the biggest challenge I?ve ever faced in a car!

?Looking ahead ? it?s going to be a challenging weekend with the longer stages on Saturday and Sunday.

?Along with Steve and Ruth, Bronwyn and I are up to the task. With our dedicated crew I?m sure that we?ll be in a strong position come Sunday night?s finish.

Midway through the third leg, Taylor and Humphrey were 30 seconds ahead of Peter Brock and Anne Gigney in a Monaro. Brock lost over five minutes on the Perth stages when his car ran out of fuel. The news was even worse for his teammate Steven Richards, who dropped over 17 minutes for exactly the same reason on the same Perth township stage.

Six times Targa winner Jim Richards and Barry Oliver continue to lead this year?s event ahead of Tony Quinn and Keith Wenn with Rex Broadbent and Michael Goedheer third all in four-wheel-drive Porsche 911 Turbos.

Tomorrow?s action has crews heading back north from Hobart to Burnie for the overnight halt, before the final run down the west coast to Hobart and the conclusion of the 2003 Targa Tasmania.
