Ford driver Paul Radisich (Shell Helix Racing) has scored his second win
from three races at the Hot Wheels V8 Supercar Showdown at the Australian
Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park.
Radisich led all the way from pole position to beat home fellow Ford Falcon
XR8 driver Craig Lowndes (Gibson Motorsport) with Russell Ingall third.
As in the second race, Ford filled eight of the top-ten positions.
The opening laps saw a great battle between Radisich, Lowndes and Ingall.
Once the temperature in the tyres warmed-up, the Shell Helix Racing Falcon
was then able to control the race.
Steven Richards (Ford Tickford Racing) was unable to make best use of his
second place on the grid after damaging the front spoiler and retiring
from the race.
Radisich’s win marked the first overall victory for Ford at the Australian
Formula One Grand Prix since 1996.
“I got a very good start and Steven Richards didn’t try to cut across me,
so I got a good run through the first turn and it all went well from there”,
said Paul Radisich.
“The victory is a great result for Ford, and I’m looking forward to battling
with the other Falcon teams throughout 2001.”
Director of Shell Helix Racing, Dick Johnson, is full of confidence going
into the season proper which begins at Phillip Island (Victoria) on March
25.
“We came ready to race this weekend, and we have gained a great psychological boost before the first championship round,” said Dick Johnson.
“Apart from some minor panel damage to Steven Johnson’s car yesterday,
we have come away with without any dramas – which on a street circuit is
quite amazing.”
Craig Lowndes was delighted with his first outing in a Ford, second place
to go with a third and 11th.
To come all the way from the back of the field to 11th on Friday was very
encouraging – then to score two podium finishes is a fantastic achievement
for our team,” said Lowndes.
“We have plenty of room for improvement and this will not be a season of
learning from the back – rather mixing it with the top teams and chasing
the title.”
