Ford Australia is recalling about 97,000 6-cylinder Falcon, Fairlane and LTD vehicles built between October 2, 1999 and January 31, 2001, to replace a rubber throttle cable grommet. The grommet, which helps to attach the throttle cable to the engine, may become damaged through consistent hard acceleration. If it is not replaced the vehicle’s accelerator may be rendered inoperative, resulting in a sudden loss of power. V8-powered vehicles are not affected.
Owners of the vehicles are being notified of the recall by mail and have been asked to contact a Ford dealer as soon as possible to arrange to have the grommet replaced, free of charge. They are also being advised to drive with caution and at moderate speeds until the work can be completed.
Ford was made aware of the condition following a small number of failures in the field. There have been no reports of accidents associated with the condition.
