Ford Racing?s commitment to winning at Mount Panorama in 2002 is the single biggest effort in Blue Oval history.
Consisting of 215 total Bathurst starts, the team includes past Bathurst winners, an ex Formula One World Champion (Alan Jones) and former 500cc World title-holder (Wayne Gardner).
Amongst the big names racing Ford Falcon AUXR8 Supercars are three-time series winner and 1996 Bathurst champion Craig Lowndes (00 Motorsport), 1989 and ?94 winner John Bowe (OzEmail Race Team) and two-time series champion Glenn Seton (Ford Credit Racing).
Adding spice to the mix is last year?s pole winner and rookie of year Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) and his Stone Brothers Racing teammate, and winner of the recent VIP Pet Foods Queensland 500, David Besnard.
The driver line-up is a combination of Australian, New Zealand, Scottish and for the first time a Brazilian, with former Williams Formula One test driver Max Wilson from Team Betta Electrical.
?Ford is giving the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 its very best shot this year,? said General Manager of Ford Racing, Howard Marsden.
?Bathurst remains the single most important race of the year. It?s important from a driver and team point of view, but for the Ford Motor Company it?s like winning the Grand Final in the AFL or NRL, you are known for 12 months as Bathurst champions.
?We not only have the strength in numbers, but when you look through our line-up we have arguably some of the best driver combinations as well.
?This is a race like no other, to win it you must have everything go your way on the day. ?It?s the 40th anniversary of the event, back in 1963 Harry Firth and the sponsor of this year?s event, Bob Jane, won in a Ford Cortina GT, it certainly would be special for one of our Ford teams to receive the 2002 trophy from Bob.?
Over the years the 1000 kilometre event at Bathurst has changed enormously. The winning car up until ten years ago could expect to win by over a lap, but the closeness of V8 Supercars has seen winning margins fall to within a handful of seconds, and last year the first nine cars all finished on the lead lap.
?It?s a 1000 kilometre sprint there?s no doubt about that,? said 2001 runner-up Brad Jones of the OzEmail Race Team.
?You can?t have any hiccups and most importantly you must be within sight of the lead group after the final round of pit stops.
?There?s been plenty of guys who drive away at the start to not even make it to the finish, you must keep your head and really work as a team both in and out of the car.
?I?ve never won at Bathurst, I?m in fact the king of the podium with five overall, including two second placings. I?m as desperate as anyone to finally conquer that mountain.?
The Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 features driver changes, fuel and brake pad pit stops; it?s expected that at least four stops will be made during the 161-lap race.
Teams first hit the track on Thursday for free practice, with Friday featuring qualifying and the top 15-shootout to be run on Saturday morning. The big race itself start at 10am Sunday morning.
