Ford Australia will open its plants to more than 7,000 Victorian students under a major educational program announced today by the Minister for Manufacturing Industry, Rob Hulls, and Ford Australia President, Geoff Polites. The program, called “Ford Alive”, was developed by Ford Australia with the assistance of the Bracks Government’s Office of Manufacturing. It has been designed as an enjoyable, high quality educational experience for students and teachers that can be tailored to link in with the curriculum of participating schools.
Mr Polites said the program would provide a fantastic opportunity for school children of all ages to gain a much better understanding of the automotive industry.
"The automotive industry is a dynamic one in which to work,” Mr Polites said. “The tour will not only allow students to gain an insight into the workings of a leading manufacturing company, but also allow older students to see the numerous career opportunities which exist in the industry.”
Mr Hulls said the announcement of the Ford schools visits program was a very appropriate way to wrap up Australian Automotive Week for this year.
“Promoting the automotive industry as a rewarding career choice for young Victorians has been a major focus of Australian Automotive Week,” Mr Hulls said. “As our Strategic Audit of the state’s automotive sector shows, the industry needs a smart, innovative and highly skilled workforce to remain internationally competitive over the coming decade.
"Through this program, thousands of Victorian students will discover for themselves that today’s automotive industry is high technology and knowledge-driven.”
Mr Hulls said the Bracks Government had been pleased to sponsor the program by providing $43,000 in funding to assist with staffing and curriculum materials.
"I congratulate Ford Australia for taking a lead role in educating the Victorian community about the modern automotive industry.”
It is anticipated that in its first full year, ‘Ford Alive’ will host around 150 tours of Ford’s Broadmeadows and Geelong manufacturing plants and Discovery Centre for 7500 primary and secondary students.
