Ford Aim for Third Straight Win in WA

Following Ford’s second straight win of 2001 and the Blue Oval’s 100th win in Australian Touring Car competition - nothing short of victory will be the aim at the sixth round of this year’s Shell V8 Championship Series at Barbagallo Raceway outside Perth on June 23 - 24.

Debut wins for Pirtek Racing’s Marcos Ambrose (Darwin) and Steve Johnson (Canberra) of Shell Helix Racing, have the Falcon AUXR8 brigade on a massive high going to the fast and undulating Wanneroo track.

Confidence is something that Johnson now has plenty of, as his Canberra win moved him to third place in the championship chase.

“I now know just what it takes to win at this level of motor sport - a lot of hard work,” said Johnson.

“The Canberra streets were pretty tough, but Perth gives us just as tough a challenge.

“Qualifying will be critical, as passing can be quite hard, and with no pit stops at this round, you can’t rely on making up positions in the pit lane.

“The three sprint-race format means everyone will go for it for the entire race, making for plenty of great action.

Another driver with confidence on his side is Craig Lowndes, the Gibson Motorsport driver has visited Barbagallo four times - on each occasion he has come away with victory.

Lowndes has taken victory in 1996, ’98, ’99 and 2000. Lowndes did not compete in 1997 as he was racing Formula 3000 in Europe.

“To have a 100 percent record in Perth is something I’m very proud of,” said Lowndes

“After having a good run in the first two races in Canberra and not to finish the final race, I’m very determined to hit-back with victory in WA.

“I expect qualifying and the races to be very tight - there’s no doubt that the competition amongst the Ford teams has helped everyone in a Falcon gain greater results in 2001.

Barbagallo will feature three sprint races of 20-laps,as well as a top-10 shootout to determine the first five rows of the grid. There will be no compulsory tyre pit stops due to the smaller pit lane in Perth.

Barbagallo also features round three of the Ford Racing Australia Formula Ford Series. The battle between young guns Will Power and Will Davison is sure to once again provide one of the highlights to this close and exciting series.

Power leads the series on 77 points, with Davison on 69 and Jamie Whincup on 56.
