The 2007 Ford Heritage Journey team has crossed the Nullarbor and arrived in the heart of Western Australia, following the same route taken 75 years ago by the original Ford Model A around Australia adventurers.
Les and Lynette Hewitt have been making steady progress in their Ford Territory, taking time to photograph a number of the same landmarks captured on glass lantern slides in 1932.
“It’s fascinating retracing my uncle’s steps and seeing the same sights they encountered,” said Les Hewitt.

“Many of the locations are easily recognisable and we’ve been able to determine exactly where my uncle took the photo from or where they parked the Ford for the night.
“I’ve also observed that once you are out of the main metropolitan areas and slightly off the beaten track, the landscape doesn’t look too dissimilar to the early 1930’s.
“I think my uncles would be pleased to know that in spite of the progress made by man, there are still large areas of Australia undisturbed by modern development.”
One major advancement between the two ages is the level of comfort offered by the choice of transport on the journey.
The Ford Territory enjoyed by the Hewitt’s is in stark contrast to the Ford Model A that participated in the original circumnavigation, offering standard features for everyday motoring that weren’t available in a house, let alone a car, in 1932.
“The Territory is the perfect companion as the variety of features available, including CD stereo and air-conditioning, help make the journey even more comfortable,” said Mr Hewitt.
“The cruise-control feature has been especially handy when crossing the Nullarbor and for other long stretches of road we’ve encountered.

“My uncles would have been amazed knowing an award-winning Australian designed, engineered and manufactured model would be replicating their expedition in 2007.”
The Ford Heritage Journey also features on ‘The Car Show’ this Saturday (August 11), screening on Channel 9 at midday EST.
‘The Car Show’ was on location to interview the Hewitt’s before they departed Melbourne last month and will feature a number of historical images from the unique glass lantern slide collection.<
