Ford has been recognised for its commitment to safety, winning the 2001 Gold Award for Automotive Engineering Excellence at the Australian Society of Automotive Engineers’ prestigious annual awards dinner.

The Gold Award – sponsored by Hewlett Packard - was presented to Ford for its AUII safety systems upgrade, which set new standards for Australian passenger car safety.

The SAE-A Automotive Engineering Excellence Awards were created to recognise excellence in engineering, design and quality in the local automotive industry.

The judges praised Ford “for its outstanding contribution to the Australian automotive industry and wider society.”

Ford Australia Safety and Environment Engineering Manager, Bruce Priddle, said the award reflected Ford’s commitment to innovative safety engineering solutions.

“Safety has always been a top priority at Ford. Our philosophy is very much about integrating safety into the design of our cars so that all of our customers benefit,” Mr Priddle said.

“The fact that these real-world safety benefits were delivered in just 18 months is a testament to the Ford culture of continuous improvement in safety standards,” he said.

Falcon was the first locally produced family sedan to provide driver and passenger airbags as standard across the range.

It is also the only Australian-built family sedan to provide energy management seat belts and a laminated impact protection panel (LIPP) as standard equipment.

Energy management seat belts limit the force applied to the wearer's chest in a severe crash, while the LIPP in the driver's floor area provides better leg protection in offset frontal crashes, where most debilitating leg injuries occur.

The Falcon also offers pyrotechnic seat belt buckle pre-tensioners and an upgraded front and side body structure for maximum occupant protection.
