Falcon Ute Terra-Fied

A joint exercise between Ford and RMIT Design students has created “Terra”—a high riding recreational bush ute with a dash of style for the Bachelors & Spinsters Ball set big night out.

Falcon Ute!

“Terra” is based on the Falcon Longreach Ute and strides up to 40OMM taller over the scnib on its off road racing suspension, packs a punch from its modified 4-litre six and never gets lost thanks to satellite navigation.
Terra draws looks, with bodywork finished in a brilliant mica ‘Coober Pedy Blue’ embellished with chrome bars front, centre and back.
The front ‘Grizzly’ bar sprouts forward from the lower bumper brake duct apertures and mounts a sturdy sump guard.
The load bed bar arches forward from the wheel houses towards the cabin and mounts a pair of innovative Australian-designed spotlights with adjustable lens and extra tough plastic housings.
And at the back is a tailgate un-mistakably from the cattle grid school of design.
Auscar 15×7 5-spoke sports alloy wheels shod with monster Yokohama 30×9.5×15 Mud Terrain tyres plus bodyside skirts complete the exterior.
Customer Capable
Conceived as part of Ford’s ongoing relationship with RMIT’s Graduate School of Design, the project was to produce a ‘customer capable show car’, demonstrating how enthusiasts could customize their working Falcon utes along more recreational and outdoor sporting lines using available after market parts, accessories and services.
Ford Light Commercial Vehicle Marketing Specialist David Hosking said “We wanted a feasible show car that a Falcon ute owner could look at and say 1 can do that’.
“Research shows our customers use their utes for both business and pleasure and that many have recreational aspirations.
“It also indicates that Falcon ute is strongly identified mostly as a tough work vehicle within our Australian ittral heritage of travelling long distances over secondary roads. However its many successes in the Australian Safari, the Mobil Round Australia Trial and offroad racing have lent it sporting image and we wanted this reflected in the Terra.
“These were the parameters we gave RMIT, who then created Terra as a base to use these after market resources”.
Cool!
Paul Copeland, Terra’s chief designer from RMIT, said “Designing to Ford’s parameters then working with the selected after market suppliers to provide or fabricate to our design was instructive for us as industrial design students”.
“It was a cool project!” he enthused.
Terra’s rich tan Interior contrasts with its striking blue exterior.
Unique features include Minidisc Audio and Global Positioning Systems, custom bucket seats and doors trimmed in leather and rubber floor mats specially grooved race style.
The rear bulkhead has been modified to provide briefcase room behind the seatbacks.
The load area features a drinks cooler under an access panel and a leather lined oddments pocket inset into the inner side wall of the load area.
Drivetrain modifications include a ‘warmer’ camshaft, extractors and a Hydratrak limited slip differential with the lower 3.45:1 ratio as fitted to the Falcon Outback Ute.
Terra’s host Falcon Longreach Ute has 4-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, 148kW (200lip) 4-litre six cylinder engine (before modifications), 4-speed electronic automatic transmission, 790kg load capacity and up to 2.3 tonne towing capacity (dependent on state or territory regulations).
Having drawn throngs at its Melbourne Motor Show debut, the “Terra” Falcon Ute is now doing the rounds of other city and country car shows and field days.
And along the way one Saturday night, Terra will pull up out front of the Conargo Pub…
