Falcon Grabs Supercar Safety Exclusive

Ford’s Falcon XR8 will lead the field away at every V8 Supercar race this year… as the exclusive choice for Official Safety Car and Course Car duties at all events in the Shell Championship Series.

To be seen for the first time at the opening round of the national V8 Supercar series at Phillip Island (Victoria) on 25 March, the Ford-supported program will provide series organisers AVESCO with a pair of high-speed response vehicles for Australia’s premier professional motor racing series.

“Ford is delighted to have the exclusive manufacturer involvement with the AVESCO Safety and Course Car Program for 2001, and we expect it will generate a lot of interest both on and off the track,” Howard Marsden, General Manager of Ford Racing says. To that end, the pair of Falcon XR8s will feature special bodywork which replicates Ford’s V8 Supercar racers, and will use program sponsor Tenneco’s products like Lukey exhaust systems and Monroe shock absorbers. “With these modifications and special paintwork, the two Falcon XR8s will really look the part,” Marsden says. AVESCO’s Safety Car is used at V8 Supercar races to control the field prior to the start of races and in the event of on-track incidents, driven by Tony Hastings who travels to each round. The Course car is used over the race weekend by a suitably-qualified local official to open and close the circuit, as well as to collect reports from various points on the track. Away from races both cars, which are transported in AVESCO’s award-winning B-double, are used extensively at pre-event promotions, driver autograph sessions, displays, motor shows and Tenneco retailer appearances. V8 Supercars annually contest the 13-race Shell Championship Series (which includes a race in New Zealand for the first time this year), plus appearances at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and Gold Coast Indy events.
