FTR’s Great Run Undone by Safety Car at the Creek

Ford Tickford Racing (FTR) was in one of its most dominant positions for many years at today’s third round of the Shell Championship Series, before a crucial safety car period ruined any hope of taking victory.

Glenn Seton sprinted from the second row to the lead at the first turn, and ten laps later team mate Steven Richards was in second.

The same lap a safety car period to remove Paul Romano’s car bunched the field together before the FTR cars could make their compulsory pit stops.

Once the FTR cars pitted, the field streamed by; leaving the Richards in 14th and Seton in 17th position.

Starting down the field did not help in race two, as Seton went on to finish 7th, while a jammed rear brake saw Richards drop to 31st at he finish.

Seton is now in ninth place in the championship on 596 points with Richards just place further back on 552 points.

“My car was great today, we got a great start to the first race and led comfortably,” said Seton.

“The first time I saw Romano’s car off the track was when the safety car actually came onto the circuit, so we had no chance to benefit.

“The second race was a good run, but you can’t expect to challenge starting that far down.

Steven Richards was the match for his teammate, as the FTR pair took up formation in the first race.

“I got a good start to be in fourth on the first lap, when I moved to second everything looked great,” said Richards.

“My crew actually called me in on the radio just before the safety car came onto the track, but I was at full speed on the front straight and couldn’t slow down to make the pit lane.

“The second race was disappointing, but we have great speed and we will be winning races very soon.

FTR next goes racing at Darwin’s Hidden Valley on May 12 – 13.
