Seton started from fifth position on the grid, but got caught up in an incident with fellow Ford drivers Marcos Ambrose and John Bowe, as well as Garth Tander.
Seton punctured the front right tyre and dropped to the back of the field before eventually finishing 27th in the 17-lap race.
Steven Richards qualified 14th, but quickly made up places through other people’s dramas.
He was also involved in an opening lap incident, losing two places, but stormed through to take ninth.
“After having such good car speed throughout today’s practice and qualifying session, to get caught up in an incident on the first corner is bitterly disappointing,” said Seton.
“The only positive I can take away is that apart from some bent panels, the car remained very fast.
“We will have a battle on our hands starting from the back tomorrow – but I will remain determined and I’ll fight back through the field.
“Others will have dramas and I’ll be there to take the benefit.
Richards was pleased with his performance and is confident of even better results tomorrow.
“The car in the race was nice and consistent, and with a few improvement we can circulate up to a second a lap quicker tomorrow,” said Richards.
“I was very cautious about not wearing out the tyres, so that we have some good rubber for tomorrow’s two 25-lap races.
“If we can keep out of trouble, and take care of the rubber I’m sure we can go towards the front.
Tomorrow two 35-lap races feature a compulsory pit stop for tyres.
