Pirtek Racing?s Marcos Ambrose is committed to victory to secure a top-two championship finish at the final round of the 2002 Supercar Series, the Betta Electrical V8 Ultimate at Sandown Raceway from November 29 ? December 1.
The Tasmanian came within a lap and half of winning the recent V8 International at Pukekohe Park Raceway south of Auckland, when a tyre failure placed him third overall for that event.
Not only did the overall win fall by the wayside, but he also went from third in the championship back to sixth.
The Devil Racer now sits 145 points behind second placed Greg Murphy, but with 240 points available at Sandown Ambrose remains confident that he can close out the season with runner-up in the V8 Series.
?The best way to give myself a chance of scoring the runner-up position is attack and go for the win,? said Ambrose.
?Our Pirtek Falcon has been quick all year and Sandown last year proved that we have a handle on that track as well.
?It?s been a tough year for the Ford fans and it would be totally unjust if a Falcon was to finish the year with just the one round.
?It would be a very sweet victory if I could score Ford?s second win of the year and claim runner-up in the championship.?
Ford was strong at Sandown last season, with Ambrose finishing third overall after fellow Falcon driver Craig Lowndes passed him with just a handful of laps left in the race to take second outright.
Lowndes put in one of the drives of the year, fighting back from 14th place to drive through torrential rain and claim victory in the final of three races.
A change in format this year will see a 150km race on the Saturday and a 300km event rounding out the season on Sunday afternoon. Saturday?s race includes a compulsory tyre pit stop, with Sunday?s double-points race including fuel and tyre stops.
?Sandown has been one of my best tracks with two wins and another two podium finishes from five rounds,? said Lowndes.
?Even though Bathurst and the Queensland 500 are longer races, they are both shared with another driver, making the final race at Sandown the longest individual race we?ll do this year.
?Racing on the first of December could mean very warm weather, so driver fitness is sure to play a crucial role in the results.
?It?ll be a tough test, but I work hard on my fitness and with a strong team in the pits I?m confident of being at the front come Sunday afternoon.?
Practice and qualifying for the Betta Electrical V8 Ultimate gets underway from Friday 29 November, with a top-15 shootout and the opening 48-lap race on Saturday. Sunday?s 96-lap race gets underway from 2pm.
