Before thrilling motor racing fans in his Ford Supercar XR8, Craig owned a Mark 1 Ford Cortina. This car will be used as a special training project for apprentices at the college and at Ford, who will work with their motorsport hero to restore the car to original condition.
Under Craig's careful guidance, the apprentices will strip and re-condition the body and gearbox. The engine will be re-worked by Craig's father, Frank Lowndes.
It is estimated that restoring the car to its prime condition will take up to two months. Upon its completion, the Mark 1 Cortina will take pride of place at the Ford Discovery Centre in Geelong.
The Gordon College of TAFE has already assisted the Ford Discovery Centre with a number of significant projects. This car too will find a home at the centre, and Craig hopes to use it occasionally on events such as the Geelong Speed Trials.
Ford Motor Company of Australia and Gordon College of TAFE have an ongoing relationship that aims to maximize educational opportunities in the Geelong community. For his part, Craig has always expressed an interest in working with young people.
"Some of these apprentices just might end up working on our race team one day" he quipped, "This way I can make sure they know how to get my panels straight again between races!"
