Chris Cox dominated proceedings during the opening day at Round 1 of the Ford KartStars held at Raleigh Raceway in NSW.Despite giving limited experience with the Rotax engine and Arrow (control) chassis` Cox came to terms with both to be the fastest driver in the field.
Cox set the two fastest laps of the first qualifying session, more than three tenths ahead of second fastest and series favourite Mark Winterbottom.
Cox also set the fastest time in the second qualifying session, but not one driver improved on their first session time.
Heat one saw Winterbottom take the early lead from Cox with Clements sitting in third for most of the race.
Cox took the lead with four laps remaining and stretched a comfortable gap over Winterbottom.
The relentless Yarwood kept at his game to wear down Clements and take fourth place at the finish.
Cox once again took the honours in heat two after being shuffled back to third in the first lap.
Winterbottom made an outside move off the start and Clements followed him past over the top of the hill.
Yarwood tried his luck on Cox at the first chicane but Cox wouldn't let the position go.
Winterbottom took a large lead until Cox worked his way past Clements to try and Hunt Winterbottom down.
Yarwood ran into Clements on the last chicane mid race trying to pass for third, the clash eventually taking its toll on Clements who dropped back with mechanical dramas.
Bryce Godfrey was the benefactor of the Yarwood / Clements clash and moved into third place setting fastest lap on his way. Cox caught up to Yarwood and passed with a few laps remaining to once again take a strong win.
With heat three, pre final and final tomorrow Chris Cox is the favourite to take out the event.
Ford Racing Australia's involvement in KartStars is aimed solely at identifying talented Australian drivers and providing them with a clear and direct path, regardless of their ability to raise the significant sums of money required to compete at the top levels.
All competitors run the same Drew Price Engineering (DPE) chassis type and the Rotax Max FR125 (cc) engines are dyno tested and then sealed, to ensure they are equal.
A control Bridgestone YGK tyre is used specifically for this Formula, and is the same tyre that was used at the World Max Challenge final and during the Ford series in 2000.
The top five drivers in the 2001 Ford Kartstars series will battle it out for three major prizes. Two drivers will each receive a full season in Formula Ford and a third will undergo a racing driver's course at one of the most famous schools in the world, in the UK.
The driver selected as the winner will compete in the 2002 Ford Australia National Formula Ford Series Championship, with the runner up to contest the Victorian State series, both compliments of Ford Racing Australia.
