City of Greater Geelong Mayor, Dr Srechko Kontelj, has welcomed Ford Australia's involvement in a new environmental network designed to encourage better business and environmental practice. The Geelong Business and Environment Network (BATE) has been established by local business managers and environmental professionals with a commitment to minimising environmental impacts of business practice.
Dr Kontelj said the new network provides an opportunity for Geelong to take a leadership role on the environment.
‘We have a great opportunity here to lead the world by becoming an environmentally sustainable city. That is our long-term goal and something we would all be proud of. BATE will play an active role in achieving that goal and we look forward to seeing the results.
‘Environmental responsibility is something we must all take seriously. In Geelong, a city founded on manufacturing and industry, we have a particular desire to ensure that the way in which we do business benefits, not threatens, the environment.’ The Mayor said.
Ford Australia President, Geoff Polites, said Ford was pleased to join the Council in supporting the environment initiative
‘Our involvement in the Geelong BATE group reinforces Ford's commitment to a sustainable future. Waste from industry comes at a cost to the environment, to business, and to the Geelong community.
The BATE group will discuss the role of business in issues such as biodiversity, global warming and the consumption of natural resources.
Executive Officer of the Geelong Manufacturing Council (GMC) David Peart said local industry has demonstrated a willingness to take up the environment challenge.
‘Industry understands the importance of working to enhance the environment and takes its responsibility to minimise and manage impacts on the environment very seriously.’ Mr Peart said.
The GMC has pursued projects aimed at reducing waste from manufacturers and the interest shown by industry in this proposal is a strong indication that this latest initiative would be successful.
Membership in Geelong's BATE network will be free, and is open to anyone involved, or interested in becoming involved in environmental improvement programs and initiatives. It is anticipated that the BATE network will consist of a steering committee, regular members, and also distribute to a wide mailing list.
‘We have had excellent results with some of our environmental measures recently, including recycling water for reuse at the Geelong Casting Plant which saves over 200,000 litres of water per day. BATE will provide us with an opportunity to share our knowledge with, and learn from other businesses in the Geelong area.’ said Mr Polites.
Other organisation such as EPA, Ecorecycle Victoria, Sustainable Energy Authority, Geelong Manufacturing Council and the Barwon Region Waste Management Group will support the initiative. The BATE concept is based on the successful Melbourne BATE model hosted by BP Australia and the City of Melbourne.
The first meeting of BATE in Geelong will take place on 5 July.
