Focus builds on Ford's established reputation for safety and security.
At the heart of Ford's Dynamic Safety Engineering philosophy is a whole-car approach to safety.
For Focus, this includes development of an ultra-rigid safety cell, surrounded by crumple zones optimised to take maximum crash energy absorption, protecting the passenger compartment during front, rear, side and roll-over crashes.
Ford is an industry leader in computing power and Focus was subjected to more than 100 different computer-simulated ?real world? crash situations during development, including front and rear straight and offset, side, side-angled, roll-over and many more - in addition to mandatory destructive tests for final certification.
Inside, the advanced body structure has been fully integrated with the restraint systems for maximum occupant protection.
Front seat belt pre-tensioners work in conjunction with load-limiting belt inertia reels designed to retain the occupant securely during a collision, yet reduce the possibility of chest injury. All models feature a driver airbag as standard. A front passenger airbag is optional on Focus CL and standard on all other models. The Focus Ghia features driver, passenger and front side airbags.
B-pillar and other surface covers also benefit from a new kind of ?sympathetic trim? designed to minimise the risk of injuries still further.
Safety of rear-seat occupants and children is equally comprehensive. A three-point seat belt for the centre rear seat is standard, as are child-safety seat mountings in all three rear-seating positions on all models.
The child seat anchor points are mounted on the rear parcel shelf on sedan and on the seat backs for the hatch models.
This avoids restricting luggage capacity with straps running through the load area.
On Ghia, where ?one shot up? power windows are specified, a ?bounce-back? feature prevents trapped hands or fingers.
The front seat backs and side trim of the interior are made with soft materials, minimising the potential for head, knee, hip and elbow injury.
Leading edge security systems
The Focus? security system was developed in close co-operation with major European insurance associations.
Focus is equipped with Ford?s latest generation electronic Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) that requires no setting by the driver and uses several trillion different access codes.
It provides a high-security engine immobiliser that inhibits the engine from starting until the correct key is inserted in the ignition lock.
All Focus models are equipped with a key-operated hood lock, which prevents the engine compartment cover from being opened from inside the car. This simple innovation, together with PATS, makes it extremely difficult to steal the car by ?hot wiring? the ignition system.
Shrouded lock mechanisms and sleeved operating cables present the first obstacle to forced entry, rendering break-in much more difficult.
Remote central double (dead) locking is standard on all models.
The ST170 is equipped with an alarm system with remote control, featuring perimeter and interior scanning sensors.
