From the next round in Darwin (15 ? 17 May), the program will be officially known as the Chubb Fire MediRace team and will step-up assistance in the preparation and maintenance of drivers? health over race weekends.
A long-time business partner of the Ford Motor Company, Chubb Fire believes the partnership with the MediRace program provides an excellent opportunity to promote its name and products through V8 racing
?Chubb Fire is a company dedicated to health and safety through our wide range of products,? said Tony Chamberlain Managing Director of Chubb Fire.
?We felt that actively supporting a program like the MediRace team was the perfect way to showcase our name and services not only to the general public, but also to the ever-increasing number of corporations that support V8 Supercar competition in Australia.
?The dedication that the Ford Motor Company is giving to the Chubb Fire MediRace program is sure to bring great benefits to the drivers and teams involved.
?As well as the MediRace program, Chubb Fire will be looking at further developing relationships within V8s to showcase products that keep the sport at the safest possible levels?.
The Chubb Fire MediRace team is led by Ford?s Corporate Manager of Health & Safety, and a trained physiologist, Kim Flanagan. The team monitors heart rates as well as collecting information on hydration and oxygen levels of the drivers.
The Chubb Fire partnership is set to see a step-up to the program.
?We?ve been working on the project since Bathurst last year and we have gained outstanding support from the Ford race teams,? said Flanagan.
?Our V8 teams all prepare and maintain the racecars to a very high level and we?re looking to do the same with the drivers.
?The performance of the car is only as good of that of the driver and the MediRace program is starting to show great results.?
The next race in Darwin is sure to show these benefits where temperatures of well over 30 degrees are expected.
Over three very tough races the conditions are set to take a toll on all drivers, and the Chubb Fire MediRace team is prepared to keep the Ford drivers well maintained throughout the weekend.
As part of MediRace program a group of Ford?s V8 Supercar drivers will be carefully monitored by world-leading medical technology initially developed by NASA for space flight.
Drivers will have their core body temperatures monitored by a unique system that has them swallowing a pill-sized sensor, which transmits data every ten seconds to a computer logger that will be outside their body.
Developed by USA-based HQI Technology, the CorTemp? device is designed for measurement of the all-important core body temperature in patients for whom rectal and tympanic catheters are not appropriate.
It?s just the third time the Florida designed and developed technology will be used in V8 racing, after trials began during last year?s final round at Sandown in Melbourne.
The CorTemp? Disposable Temperature Sensor (COR-100) is a totally safe method of transmitting the data and remains intact after being passed through the body.
?After starting medical monitoring at Bathurst last year and introducing the use of the CorTemp? device at Sandown, Darwin will be critical in utilising the technology to monitor the Ford drivers in the heat of battle,? said Kim Flanagan.
?Drivers will endure cabin heat of well over 20 degrees above the ambient air temperature, while being fully clothed in triple-lined flame proof suits and helmets throughout each race.
?Being able to maintain a driver through three very tough races could make the difference between winning and losing.
?We are not giving the drivers anything special, simply better understanding what each individual requires to keep him at peak performance throughout the race.
?In a sport such as car racing you can?t afford to be fit enough for just 90 percent of the race. We believe this program will give the Ford drivers a distinct advantage in the final run to the flag of each race.
?HQI Technology has been a great supporter of the Chubb Fire MediRace team and they have provided us all the equipment at next to no cost. The information we gain is sent back to them so that they can continue to further develop this unique product,? Flanagan concluded.
Along with Flanagan, the MediRace team includes Medical Team Leader Dr. Frank Vella, Dr. Tony Bernard, and Registered Nurse Chrystal Musgrave.
