Cathcart Takes Unbeatable Lead After Adelaide Kartstars

Victoria?s Clint Cathcart has taken an unbeatable lead in the 2002 Ford KartStars Series, after scoring his second win of the year at round four at Bolivar outside Adelaide.

Cathcart was the KartStars Series leader going into the Adelaide event after dominating the opening round in Canberra, before being challenged at the next two events at Geelong (Taz Douglas) and Coffs Harbour (Adam Graham).

23-year-old Cathcart from Bundoora was back in the zone in Adelaide, running consistently throughout the heats before winning the pre-final and backing that up once again in the final.

Rowville (NSW) driver Nick Parker got the jump at the start of the final, leading for two laps before Cathcart assumed control. Cranbourne (Victoria) driver Taz Douglas then took up the fight to Cathcart, with Ipswich?s (Qld) Scott Auld also joining the battle in the late stages.

Cathcart was able to fend off the challenge, to grab the chequered flag ahead of his two rivals and importantly take full control of the KartStars Series.

?A great weekend for us, against what has been very stiff competition,? said Cathcart.

?Despite our lead in the championship the pressure is still well and truly on going into the final round at Willowbank.

?The final winner of the KartStars Series is not necessarily the first placed driver, so it?s important that I impress every time I race.

?Another win at Queensland would top-off a great year and give me the very best chance of being the champion.?

The final round of the 2002 KartStars Series is run in conjunction with the VIP Pet Foods Queensland 500 Supercar event. Ford Racing Australia?s leading V8 Supercar drivers and team managers will be on hand to spot the next group of motor sports stars.

In just its third year of existence, the KartStars is the only motor racing series aimed solely at identifying talented Australian drivers and providing them with a clear and direct path, regardless of their ability to raise the significant sums of money required to compete at the top levels.

Instead of simply picking the winner of an existing series, Ford management realised that to really identify talent, a one-make class had to be created where the strength of competition relied on skill rather than money.

The top-four placegetters from the KartStars Series will be put through an intensive evaluation process with the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS). Two of these four drivers will receive a full season in the 2003 Australian Formula Ford Series courtesy of Ford Racing as well as a day?s testing with the Super Cheap Auto Racing V8 Supercar team of Steve Ellery.

All competitors run the same Drew Price Engineering (DPE) Arrow chassis and the Rotax Max FR125 (cc) engines.

A control Bridgestone YGK tyre is used specifically for this Formula, and is the same tyre that was used at the World Max Challenge final and during the Ford series in 2000 and 2001.
