Following its third straight win of 2001 at Western Australia’s Barbagallo Raceway, Ford teams are confident of once again taking the top spot.
Ford’s three successive wins have come from different drivers; Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) and the Shell Helix Racing duo of Steve Johnson and Paul Radisich.
Radisich was outstanding at Calder in 2000, finishing on equal points with round winner Steve Richards; who was awarded the overall win after placing higher in the final race of the day.
Both Radisich and Richards, who now drives for Ford Tickford Racing (FTR), are positive that Ford’s drought at Calder will be ended in 2001.
“This sport is all about momentum, our team has got it right now and I’m very confident that Calder will be ours,” said Radisich.
“Calder is quite short and quick, and like Barbagallo there will be no compulsory pit stops, so qualifying at the front will be critical.
“While we didn’t actually get the winners trophy last year, the team had a great day, and we know what’s needed to be successful at Calder.
Although Calder 2000 was Richards’ last round win in the Shell Championship, the FTR driver is confident of gaining that much-needed first round win for his new team in 2001.
“We’ve had very good car speed this year - my victory in the second race of the GMC 400 in Canberra last month proved that,” said Richards.
“If we can get it right in qualifying, I’m sure our cars will be the one’s to catch.
“Confidence is a great ingredient in this sport - qualifying will see the top 20 cars separated by around one second. So if you are confident in yourself and the car, you will be at the front.
“I know that Ford’s great form has all the Falcon teams on a high, we just need to make sure we’re leading the blue oval charge.
Other drivers with Calder success include Glenn Seton (FTR), who took his first ever round win in the Touring Car Championship back in 1987; as well as Gibson Motorsport’s Craig Lowndes, who was the overall winner in 1998.
Calder will feature three sprint races of 21-laps, as well as a top-10 shootout to determine the first five rows of the grid. There will be no compulsory tyre pit stops.
