They say winners are grinners. Put together one of the most successful young drivers in recent Australian motorsport history, and one of the friendliest faces around the paddock, with team mates, competitors and fans alike, and you could say that the face of Craig Lowndes proves the point.
Craig came from a strong background in karts, and in Formula Ford – the world’s great race driver training ground. He won the Formula Ford title in 1993, and was offered a test drive with HRT the following year. Endurance race drives at Sandown and Bathurst in 1994 and 1995 saw him quickly establish his impressive style, with a second place on his debut at Bathurst, and pole positions in 1995 at both events.
In 1996, Craig made a clean sweep in his debut season in the Australian Touring Car Championship, followed up by victories at both Sandown and Bathurst with Greg Murphy. Not since Peter Brock, in 1980, had a single driver taken the triple crown.
Craig is the youngest driver to have ever won the Australian Touring Car Championship.
Series champion again in ‘98 and ‘99, Craig finished his HRT duties at the end of 2000 with a championship victory, co-driving Mark Skaife at Bathurst and coming third overall in the title series.
Even prior to the end of the season, the question of where Craig Lowndes would go for 2001 had become one of the most hotly debated topics in Australian motorsport for many years.
A big favourite with the crowd, his future career had been speculated upon in the media for months, resulting in some highly imaginative theories.
Now contracted to Ford, and driving for the new Gibson Motorsport team, Craig is looking forward to fresh pastures and new challenges for 2001 and beyond.
“Fred is one of the most highly respected figures in Australian motorsport,” says Craig. “I can’t imagine anyone I’d rather work with and his passion and enthusiasm for this new challenge is inspirational.
“Geoff Polites has become a good friend and has talked me through all the issues and challenges of Ford’s motorsport campaign in great detail, while leaving me to make the call on what I thought was going to be the best move for me personally in 2001.
“I’ve developed a great deal of respect for him and nothing would make me happier than to make a significant contribution to the success that he and Fred are determined to achieve.”
