In 1932, three adventurers departed Melbourne on a remarkable road trip around Australia in a Ford Model A, completing the challenging 15,840km journey in just over three months. Now, 75 years later, the nephew of one of the men is planning to recreate the historic journey, this time in a new Ford Territory.

Mr Les Hewitt and his wife Lynette’s ‘Ford Heritage Journey’ sets out from Melbourne on July 4 and will replicate their forbears’ route around Australia.
“Part of the special significance of the original expedition was the unique glass lantern slides my uncle took as a record of the trip, all of which have been meticulously archived and saved to CD for future posterity,” said modern-day adventurer, Les Hewitt.
“Their journey captured some amazing moments in Australian history and I plan to revisit the places they’ve documented and write my own account of what I see and experience. You could say that I’m reliving history, but also creating some of my own as I go.”

Ford Australia decided to become involved in the expedition after realising the strong historical aspect of the Hewitt’s journey.
“Ford has a long and proud history in Australia and while many thousands of Ford models would have since driven around this great country, the fact the original 1932 expedition is so well documented had strong appeal for us,” said Rebecca Martin, Ford Australia General Marketing Manager.
“Many of the slides feature the Ford Model A and it’s amazing to view the type of terrain they successfully negotiated in those days. Thankfully the all-wheel drive capability of the award-winning Ford Territory will stand the Hewitt’s in good stead if they happen upon any similar conditions!”
Since its launch in mid-2004, Ford Territory has established itself as one of Australia’s most popular and respected new models. Territory’s innovative mix of car-like styling and vehicle dynamics, combined with the versatility of a traditional SUV and the practicality of a people mover has made it a firm favourite amongst new car buyers.
“Territory is a shining light in the modern motoring world, in much the same way as the Model A was back in the 1930s,” said Ms Martin.
“The Territory AWD’s modern creature-comforts, such as air conditioning, cruise control, dynamic-stability control and six-speed automatic transmission will make the 16,000km journey a pleasure cruise compared with conditions experienced 75 years ago.”
Mr Hewitt is similarly confident the Ford Territory will handle the journey with consummate ease.
“I’ve been driving a Territory in the lead-up to our departure and I’m very impressed by the handling characteristics of the vehicle.
“Replicating the journey in a Model A would have been quite a challenge, so I’m very pleased Ford is involved as we’re assured of travelling in comfort and style.

“I’d love to think that in another 75 years, one of my relations would have the same passion and enthusiasm to document their adventure driving a new Ford model of the future around Australia.”
