Ambrose started from second position in the 13-lap encounter, with pole-man Mark Skaife converting his number one position with victory.
On a day that included practice, qualifying, top-10 shootout and a 50-kilometre race, fans were treated to a great day's action.
Ambrose was especially sensational in the top-10 shootout, where he improved from seventh to second in a blistering one-lap dash.
"The shootout really set things up for the race," said Ambrose.
"I got a pretty good start in the race itself, but Skaife was able to hold his line going into the first bend. From there it was a case of maintaining position.
"Tomorrow's races are over 150-kilometres and include compulsory pit stops for tyres, so it was important to get a strong result in today's opener.
"We tend to show our strength in the longer races, so I'm confident we can go for victory tomorrow.
"Taking care of the tyres will be vital and picking the right time to stop is set to be the key moment."
Other standouts for Ford included Steve Ellery (Super Cheap Auto Racing) who took his best result of the season with sixth place. Ambrose team-mate David Besnard (Caltex Havoline Racing held off a string of cars including Craig Lowndes (00 Motorsport).
The first of tomorrow's two 150-kilometre (39-lap) races gets underway from 11:15am.
