On a day when consistency mattered more than race wins, Ambrose took the round with a second, fourth and third placings, to beat home current championship leader Jason Bright and defending Shell Series titleholder Mark Skaife.
In a great weekend for Ford, Ambrose’s Stone Brothers Racing teammate, and fellow championship rookie, David Besnard (Caltex Havoline Racing) scored his best result for the season with fifth placing overall.
It was history revisited for Pirtek Racing, as it took the round win in Darwin in 1999 with Bright.
On a day where 30+ degree temperatures sapped the energy from the drivers, Ambrose kept his cool under pressure.
“This is definitely a career highlight - it was the toughest conditions I’ve ever driven in,” said Ambrose.
“I thought it would take many months to start getting on top of this form of racing, so to get a round win after just four events is a great thrill.
“I’m now in fourth place in the Championship and setting my sites on further improvement and race wins will be a big part of that.
For David Besnard Hidden Valley has marked the end of his slow start to the season. Like his teammate, he’s now after further success and a rise up the standings.
“After non-finishes and patchy qualifying, this weekend was certainly a great run for me,” said Besnard.
“The team has two strong racecars, now we can legitimately say we have two strong drivers.
“The team is on real high right now and I’m very much enjoying that feeling – both Marcos and I are determined to keep that feeling for the rest of the season.
As good as it was for the Stone Brothers Racing duo – for Paul Radisich and Craig Lowndes, Darwin will not hold happy memories.
Despite taking sixth place yesterday, Radisich’s Shell Helix Racing Falcon suffered its second engine failure for the weekend and was a non-starter in race two and three.
Lowndes (Gibson Motorsport) was in the wrong place at the wrong time, when fellow Ford driver Cameron McLean collided with the three-time Series Champion on just the ninth lap of the second race.
Extensive damage to the suspension and the structural supports, valued in excess of $40,000, was the result and a non-start in the final race.
Ford next goes racing at the GMC 400 on the streets of Canberra on June 7 – 10. Three races, including a reverse-grid, are sure to provide another dramatic round of this year’s V8 Championship.
