V8 Supercar Champion Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) has stormed from 21st on the grid to finish third in the opening race of round #5 of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship Series at Perth's Barbagallo Raceway.Mark Skaife scored his first win of the year ahead of Jason Bright.
Despite his worst qualifying performance in 44 career starts, Ambrose and his Stone Brothers Racing team put their head down for the opening 42-lap race.
The big break came at the end of just the second lap, when championship leader and pole sitter, Stephen Richards crashed out from the lead when he tangled with Skaife and Bright.
With Ambrose running down the order he was able to jump into the pits ahead of the leaders and make his compulsory tyre stop a lap ahead of most of the field.
He returned in 12th position and after the safety car left the circuit he went on a spirited drive passing all but Skaife and Bright.
The WA fans were on their feet lap after lap as the #1 Falcon picked-off cars.
The result and the non-finish by Richards now has Ambrose back in the lead of the championship, ahead of Greg Murphy and Rick Kelly. Richards drops back to fourth and has to start from last position in tomorrow's first race.
"There was no way I thought we could get this result," said Ambrose.
"We goofed it in practice and qualifying, but our strength at Stone Brothers Racing is getting it turned around and we nailed it.
"In some ways it was lucky to be down the field. I passed the accident and then turned left straight into the pits. I was actually in pit lane when the boys got on the radio and said come in!
"With our pit bay at the end of the road I got in nice and clean, then straight out. I didn't even know it was Richards off the track, until I came around behind the safety car and saw them pulling his car off the side of the track.
"From that point the car was a really fast and I knew we had a chance to get some points back. So I put my head down.
"We were doing the fastest laps of the weekend during the final part of the race. I went three-tenths of a second quicker than qualifying on the second last lap
"It's been exciting afternoon, our rival didn't finish and I have a legitimate chance of winning the round. We'll make some improvements to the car overnight; importantly we now know we're on the right track in terms of set-up!"
Tomorrow completes round #5 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series with two more 42-lap races.
