Ambrose Rains in Phillip Island V8 Qualifing

Pirtek Racing's Marcos Ambrose has stormed to pole position for the second round of the 2002 V8 Supercar Series at Victoria's Phillip Island.

Ambrose set the fastest time in a wet qualifying session and then backed it up with a storming drive in the top-10 shootout (1 minute 45.5613 seconds).

The Ford Falcon driver was behind on the two split-time sections of the circuit, but made up 0.3 of a second in the final few hundred metres to grab pole from Jason Bright and Mark Skaife.

Ambrose's teammate David Besnard (Caltex Havoline Racing) improved from sixth to fourth, to give the Stone Brothers Racing team cars on the front two rows.

Today's pole is Ambrose's fourth (from 15 starts) of his V8 Championship career and his first since Bathurst last year.

"It's been very tricky today with the weather changing so much, but the whole team stuck to its guns and we've gained a great qualifying result," said Ambrose.

"I really pushed in the second part of the lap, and the final corner was really good and that gave us the time.

"In wet conditions it's hard to get heat into the tyres, so the second part of the lap it got quicker and I had the confidence to go for it.

"Tomorrow will be very tough, but we're up for the challenge and I'm sure our race package will be just as strong".

David Besnard put in his best qualifying session since the 2002 Queensland 500 (second place) and is confident that the race will bring him a good a result.

"We've had good race-speed but have had some trouble in qualifying before this weekend," said Besnard.

"With the weather remaining unpredictable, being up the front is a big advantage and I'm keen to make the most of it.

"My confidence for the races themselves has always been good. With our team's pit work also improving both Marcos and I will have a great chance of winning".
