In front of a crowd in excess of 30,000, Mark Skaife won the round ahead of teammate Jason Bright.
Ambrose looked set to take advantage of his pole position in the day?s opening 150-kilometre race, but a jammed wheel-nut in his compulsory pit stop dropped him back to 28th on the road.
The Ford Falcon AUXR8 driver then charged through the field to take fourth place in what turned out to be a dramatic race.
On four occasions the safety car was called onto the circuit to remove cars that had been involved in incidents.
The most dramatic involving Ford driver Paul Weel who rolled at turn one. Weel was unhurt in the accident and the car was repaired to start the day?s second race.
Ambrose dropped back from his starting position in race two, but an excellent stop by his crew had him back up to third behind Steven Richards.
Ambrose moved passed Richards and was closing in on Skaife when he spun off the circuit. The Pirtek driver was able to re-join just in front of Richards and held on to finish runner-up in the final race.
The Tasmanian?s result has elevated him to third in the championship behind Skaife and Bright. Just 94 points separates second through to fifth in the championship.
?After yesterday?s pole position, I?m a little disappointed not to have fully capitalised today,? said Ambrose.
?In saying that to come from 28th to fourth in race one, then have a spin and still finish runner-up in race two is a great effort in terms of the strength of our Falcon.
?Our car?s great in qualifying, but in the long races that proves to be a little tough on the tyres.
?300 kilometres today was very tough, but the car never skipped a beat and that gives us confidence going into the next few rounds.?
Another star driver for Ford today was Super Cheap Auto Racing?s Steven Ellery who took sixth place overall.
By far his best performance of the year, Ellery chose to run at a consistent pace while others came undone around him.
?I was needed solid result today and to come home sixth is a big bonus for us,? said Ellery.
?The Super Cheap team has had our fair share of bad luck this year, so to steer clear of all the dramas and show our true speed is very satisfying.
?We need to be more consistent in qualifying and I?m sure a big result is not too far away?.
Ford next goes racing in the V8 Series at Winton in central Victoria on August 17 ? 18.
