Ambrose Fights Through to Take Fifth at Winton

Pirtek Racing’s Marcos Ambrose has fought his way from a starting position of 18th on the grid, to take fifth overall at round 10 of the Shell Championship Series at Winton Raceway in central Victoria.

The round was won by Russell Ingall, ahead of Greg Murphy and Mark Skaife.

Ambrose performance was the drive of the day as he picked-off cars lap after lap in the first race to finish fifth. This was done after he was forced to leave the track in avoidance of a first corner crash.

He then backed that up with third place in the day’s second race, finishing just one second behind race winner Ingall.

“The Falcon was a rocket today,” said Ambrose.

“The changing weather conditions caught us out yesterday in qualifying, but today we clearly showed our strength.

“I actually passed something like ten or so cars on the track, as well as had good pit-stops from my crew.

“It was a great challenge today, and we are in a strong position going to the Bathurst.

The focus for teams now switches to the biggest race of the year, the Bathurst V8 1000.

Teams have a month to prepare for Australia’s Great Race, where once again co-drivers will be called upon to share the driving duties around the challenging Mount Panorama track.

All Melbourne and Queensland based teams will test extensively before the race, with some crews set to hit the track by next week.

Not only is the prestige of winning Bathurst on the line, as the race carries the largest points haul of any event on the calendar.

Today’s two races brought a total of 135 for each for the winner – Bathurst alone is worth 540 points.

The Bathurst V8 Supercar 1000 will be held on Sunday October 7.
