As well as taking out his first round in the Shell Championship Series, the 24-year old Tasmanian also signed a long-term contract with Ford before catching the plane to Darwin.
“Marcos has had a long association with us and is a great asset to Ford,” said Ford Australian President, Geoff Polites.
“Marcos is 100% committed to winning - in or out of the racecar and so are we.
“His enthusiasm is infectious - spurring his own Pirtek team along, as well as everyone involved in Ford Racing.
In making the announcement Mr Polites not only spoke about Ambrose’s current achievements, but his great potential in the popular V8 championship.
“Marcos has been at the top of the time sheets from the start of the season,” Mr Polites said.
“That’s pretty impressive given he’s been in Europe for the past few years.
“He hadn’t seen, let alone driven on, the Darwin circuit before arriving in the Northern Territory last week.
From Launceston, Ambrose returned to Australian motor sport this year after three seasons in Europe.
His most notable achievement was victory in the 1999 European Formula Ford Championship as well as second place in the 1997 Australian Formula Ford Series.
Marcos says the growth in the Australian based V8 championship was too good to pass up. His competitors have been stunned since his arrival and now regard him as a championship threat.
“I have had great success with Ford in the past, especially my days in Formula Ford, now I’m after further victories in Australia’s leading category, V8 Supercars,” said Ambrose.
“Having a long term commitment in any sport is hard to come by, so to know what my future holds lets me concentrate on racing.
“I have a two-year deal with Pirtek Racing, and I want to continue to make the most of that opportunity - if everything works out, we will all be winners.
Ambrose is currently ranked fourth in the 2001 title chase, two ahead of Steven Johnson (Shell Helix Racing) with Ford Tickford Racing’s Glenn Seton (eighth) rounding out the top three for Ford.
Ford has 13 factory-supported drivers in nine teams in the Australian V8 Championship Series. Seven of these drivers are under the age of 30.
