V8 Supercar Champion Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) has taken a healthy 50-point lead in the V8 Supercar Championship Series after finishing second overall at round #5 of the series at Perth's Barbagallo Raceway.

Jason Bright scored his second overall win of the season, with Rick Kelly finishing third.

Despite qualifying 21st (the worst of his 44-start career), it was a champion performance from Ambrose who took third in the first race on Saturday, then fourth and third places in today's final two 42-lap races.

Ambrose's big gain in the championship came in the opening race, when rival Steven Richards, failed to finish. Richards finished 14th overall and is now third in the championship chase behind Rick Kelly.

A new surface at the Perth track made for some of the best racing of recent times in the V8 Supercar Championship Series. Cars battled throughout the three races, with plenty of passing for the record crowd of 47,800.

Ambrose was in the thick of most of the action with plenty of hard racing with the likes of John Bowe (OzEmail Racing), Steven Richards, as well as Rick and Todd Kelly.

One of the only dramas for Ambrose came in the final race when he pulled-off the circuit to make his compulsory tyre stop. Ahead of him Greg Murphy spun at the pit entry and partially blocked the track, but Ambrose squeezed by and made his stop.

After three long haul trips to New Zealand, Darwin and Perth, Ambrose now heads to his home track of Queensland Raceway for round six in three weeks time.

"This weekend's races have been really enjoyable," said Ambrose.

"The racing was some of the best we've had in ages and although we rubbed some panels everyone was pretty fair about the whole thing.

"Second overall was a top result considering how our weekend started. Bright certainly had the car to beat this weekend and to be behind him at the end was about where we deserved to be.

"Murphy's spin was pretty amazing and it could have been a whole lot worse if he actually blocked the pit entry. That type of thing underlines the unpredictable nature of this sport.

"To be the first Ford home again is great, but with so many Holdens getting into the championship mix it's not getting any easier.

"I have to say that we had three great races this weekend due to the resurfaced track. There has been a lot of talk around that they want to give these cars less grip to improve the racing. This weekend showed that if you give the cars better grip, then the better the racing will be.

"We finally now head back home to Queensland. We'll get a test in before that round and I'm very keen to get a win and stretch this championship.

"The other factor is that we return to a single 300km race, and that means we have to get it right from the outset."

John Bowe concluded another consistent run this weekend to be fifth overall and improve his championship position to sixth.

A solid run for Steve Ellery (Super Cheap Auto Racing) finished 10th overall.

The V8 Supercar championship now heads to round #6 at Queensland Raceway outside Ipswich on between July 2-4.
